Foreign driving license in Switzerland

Is it allowed to drive with a foreign license in Switzerland?

According to my experience, having a B Spanish driving license, you have the right to drive with it for up to 12 months, from the date of entry to Switzerland. Then you must exchange it for the Swiss one. Attention, I recommend getting it in advance for anything that may arise, if you cannot redeem it for any reason, then you must get it in Switzerland, from scratch.

In order to make the exchange you must provide:

  1. Fill out a form.

  2. Bring a passport photo.

  3. Do the vision exam. It cost me about 20 CH, the price will depend on the Optician where you are going to do it, it didn't take me more than 1 minute to do it.

  4. Pay the fee, which in my case is about CH144, in the canton Obwalden.

  5. Now in many cases you have to pass a driving test and take an exam in Switzerland, in my case I didn't have to do it. It depends on the canton you are in and the conditions of each person.
